SIKKIM 5

Having finished a wonderful stay at Pelling, we moved on to Ravangla, about 70 kms away. Ravangla is at an altitude of 7000 feet and is a sleepy little town, set amongst some rolling hills and green forest. The road was a little dicey, having been recently ravaged by a 3-day shower. A road block meant we had to take a narrow, potholed ,winding ,steep road upwards which strained our manful Indica. However once we reached Ravangla, we had forgotten the journey. We stayed at Babumoshai Resort about 4 Kms proximal to the main town. A cobbled pathway lined by a profusion of daisies, led us to a log cottage. The basic amenities were there. Cable TV, geyser, phone etc. We had to order food well in advance. There were no eggs, but the rest of the food was cooked with sincerity and care. We sat outside and watched the highway below. An occasional vehicle, some giggling schoolgirls singing a folk song as they walked back to their homes, and the occasional cavorting dog broke the silence intermittently. The mountains rose in the distance and then subsided in the advancing twilight. A few bees buzzed about resenting our presence. Occasional drumbeats from a nearby hidden temple echoed downwards.

Down below us was an abandoned Tin- shedded house, covered with rust but still shiny enough in some areas, to catch and reflect the last sunrays.

On our right a lonely seat stood silently, waiting for an intrepid occupant.

We decided to do our sightseeing tomorrow. Tonight we would just soak in the special silence of the mountainside.
